Top 7 Weekend Motorcycle Rides from Mumbai & Pune (Ghats, Coastal & Trails)

CRUIZR Western Ghats Chapter
Oct 11, 2026

The Western Ghats provide the ultimate playground for motorcyclists in Maharashtra. With twisty tarmac cuts, dramatic elevation changes, and coastal breezes within a 2-to-3-hour radius of Mumbai and Pune, weekend riding is a way of life here.

Whether you are carving corners on a KTM or cruising on a Meteor 350, here are the 7 top weekend motorcycle routes with actionable route breakdowns.

1. Tamhini Ghat (Pune to Mangaon – 140 km Return)

  • Starting Point: Chandani Chowk, Pune
  • Elevation & Curves: Over 40 km of continuous twisties descending toward the Konkan plains
  • Key Stops: Mulshi Lake viewpoint, Quick Bites at Mangaon
  • Best Season: Monsoons and Post-Monsoon (July to November)

Tamhini Ghat connects Pune with the Konkan belt. The freshly laid portions of asphalt make it a dream for cornering, though lingering gravel on corners demands respect.

2. Malshej Ghat (Mumbai / Pune – 280 km Return)

  • Route: Kalyan – Murbad – Malshej Ghat (NH 61)
  • Highlights: Towering cliff faces, roadside streams, and flamingo sanctuaries near Pimpalgaon Joga Dam
  • Road Condition: Good 2-lane highway with dramatic hairpins

Malshej Ghat is famous for dramatic mist canopies during morning hours. Early morning rides from Thane/Kalyan let you arrive at the summit right as the fog parts over the valley.

3. Lonavala & Tiger Point (Old Mumbai-Pune Highway – 160 km Return)

  • Route: NH 48 (Old Highway)
  • Recommended Departure: 5:30 AM
  • Iconic Pitstop: Ramakant Vada Pav (Khopoli) or German Bakery (Lonavala)
  • Road Note: Two-wheelers are strictly barred from the Mumbai-Pune Expressway; stick to the scenic Old NH 48.

The quintessential weekend breakfast sprint. Taking the Bhor Ghat incline via Khopoli provides sweeping curves and wide shoulders. Tiger Point and Lion's Point provide spectacular views of the Sahyadri ranges.

4. Lavasa Backwaters Loop (Pune – 110 km Return)

  • Starting Point: Kothrud / Pirangut, Pune
  • Tarmac Quality: High-traction banked corners and technical hairpins
  • Best For: Sport bikes, naked streetfighters, and handling enthusiasts

The private township approach road to Lavasa remains one of the best technical twisty roads in western India. Elevation shifts and continuous S-curves require disciplined countersteering and throttle control.

5. Mumbai to Alibaug via Coastal State Highway (200 km Return)

  • Route: Panvel – Pen – Wadkhal Naka – Alibaug
  • Vibe: Coastal breeze, coconut groves, and sea-food dhabas
  • Best Beach Stop: Varsoli Beach or Nagaon Beach

For riders who prefer gentle coastal cruising over steep mountain ascents, the coastal run to Alibaug provides relaxing long straights, rustic village scenery, and ocean views.

6. Pawna Lake Circuit (120 km from Pune / 180 km from Mumbai)

  • Route: Kamshet or Somatane exit off Old NH 48
  • Highlights: Camping viewpoints, Tikona Fort backdrop, lakeside gravel trails
  • Ideal Motorcycle: Dual-sport & Adventure bikes (XPulse 200, Himalayan, Scrambler)

Pawna Lake is encircled by broken tarmac, dirt causeways, and sweeping water views. It is ideal for riders testing their off-road balance and camping out with a motorcycle club.

7. Igatpuri & Kasara Ghat (Mumbai – 240 km Return)

  • Route: Eastern Express Highway – Kalyan – Kasara – Igatpuri (NH 160)
  • Highlights: 6-lane wide ghat ascent, Bhavali Dam, Camel Valley
  • Pitstop: Manas Resort or local dhabas along Kasara

Kasara Ghat offers one of the widest, safest dual-carriageway mountain ascents in India. The sweeping curves allow comfortable cruising speeds without cramped single-lane hazards.

Group Riding Tips for Western Ghats Roads

  1. Watch Out for Wet Gravel: After monsoon rains or heavy truck traffic, apex corners often accumulate loose stones and red mud.
  2. Convoy Intercom: Ghat sections have numerous blind curves where hand signals cannot be seen by riders three positions behind. Using CRUIZR's free hands-free intercom lets the lead rider call out oncoming tourist buses instantly.
  3. Emergency SOS Ready: Cellular network dead zones occur between ghat valleys. Ensure your group has emergency SOS and offline ride tracking activated.
